Weekly Update 3/10-3/13

This Week:
  • We focused on blends (sl, pl, fl, cl) and digraphs (ch, th, sh, wh).
  • We learned the sight words him, was, and seven.
  • We read a story called Harry at the Sea and talked about making predictions.
  • We continued our social studies unit on symbols of the United States.

Next Week:
  • We will focus on the letter Ee.
  • We will learn the words with, my, and eight.
  • We will learn words in the -et word family.
  • We will read a story called My Lucky Day! and work on making inferences.
  • We will learn about ordering numbers from smallest to largest.
  • We will finish our social studies unit on symbols of the United States.

What to Ask Your Kindergartener:
  • To name the coins we learned about.
  • To sort some coins at home.
  • To practice reading the sight words.

Reminders and Other News:
  • Spring is on the way!  Even though it has been warmer and the snow is melting, students still need to have snow pants, boots, coats, hats, and mittens each day until the playground dries up.  
  • A game mat came home in your child's folder cheetah binder today.  Feel free to fill in the shamrocks with numbers, sight words, or letters to practice skills at home.

Weekly Update 2/24-2/28

This Week:
  • We focused on the letter Ll.
  • We learned words in the –op word family.
  • We read a story called Roses for Harry and worked on making inferences.
  • We learned the words five, will, and his.
  • We worked on counting by 2's and 5's.
  • We learned about symbols of the United States.


Next Week:
  • We will focus on the letter Gg.
  • We will read Dr. Seuss stories and work on rhyming.
  • We will learn the words six, her, and me.
  • We will learn words in the -og word family.
  • We will learn about 3D shapes.
  • We will continue our social studies unit on symbols of the United States.

After Conferences:
  • We will focus on blends and digraphs.
  • We will read stories about St. Patrick's Day.
  • We will learn the words seven, him, and was. 
  • We will learn about 3D shapes and numbers to 20.
  • We will continue our social studies unit on symbols of the United States.


What to Ask Your Kindergartener:
  • To tell you some of their favorite things about Kindergarten.
  • To count to 100 by 10’s
  • To tell you some words in the –ot and –op word families
  • To count backwards from 20
  • To count to 30 by 1’s starting with 8
  • To read these words: fog, box, pot, mop


Reminders and Other News:
  • A new reading log is in your child's folder today.  Please return all February reading logs for a bookmark and pizza coupon by Wednesday, March 4th. 
  • Conferences are coming up on Thursday and Friday.  A reminder slip is in your child's cheetah binder today.

Weekly Update 2/18-2/21

This Week:
  • We focused on the letter Hh.
  • We learned the words four, big, and come.
  • We learned words in the –ot word family.
  • We read stories about the 100th day of school.
  • We worked on reading numbers to 100.

Next Week:
  • We will focus on the letter Ll.
  • We will learn the sight words five, will, and his.
  • We will read stories about Harry the Dirty Dog and work on making predictions and inferences.
  • We will learn words in the -op word family.
  • We will practice writing our last names.
  • We will learn about symmetry and 3D shapes.
  • We will begin learning about symbols of the United States.



What to Ask Your Kindergartener:
  • To count to 100 by 1's.
  • To read these numbers: 12, 17, 14, 31, 24, 28
  • To tell you the middle sound in these words: map, tot, pig, tip, mad.
  • To write their first and last name with no model (if ready) and correct capitalization.



Reminders and Other News:
  • Please send a hat and mittens to school with your child each day along with a coat, snow pants, and boots.  All of these things are necessary to help kids be comfortable and avoid injuries on the playground.

Weekly Update 2/10-2/13

This Week:
  • We  read a story called A Porcupine Named Fluffy and worked on making connections and inferences.
  • We focused on the letter Oo.
  • We learned the words three, this, and that.
  • We learned about two digit numbers to 100.
  • We learned about Abraham Lincoln and Presidents' Day.

Next Week:
  • We will focus on the letter Hh.
  • We will learn the words four, big, and come.
  • We will read books about the 100th day of school.
  • We will do math activities focusing on the number 100.
  • We will learn about George Washington.
  • We will celebrate the 100th day of school!

What to Ask Your Kindergartener:
  • To tell you some words that rhyme with fun, net, shoe, bug, toy, and frog.
  • To count backwards from 20.
  • To tell you the end sound in words you say.
  • To practice writing their numbers to 20 with no reversals.

Reminders and Other News:
  • Conferences are coming up soon. If the conference time you were assigned doesn't work for you, please contact me.
  • There is 100th day homework in your child's cheetah binder today.  Please have your child complete the work and return by Wednesday.

Weekly Update 2/3-2/7

This Week:
  • We focused on the letter Ff.
  • We learned the words two, no, and not.
  • We read a stories about colors.
  • We learned about heart symmetry.
  • We practice composing and decomposing numbers and identifying numbers to 31.


Next Week:
  • We will focus on the letter Oo.
  • We will learn the words this and that.
  • We will read a stories about Valentine's Day.
  • We will learn words in the –ot word family.
  • We will work on counting by 2's and 5's and identifying/writing numbers to 31.
  • We will celebrate Valentine's Day!
  • We will learn about Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Presidents' Day.


What to Ask Your Kindergartener:
  • To tell you some words that rhyme with when, net and pin.
  • To practice writing the numbers 0-31.
  • To write their name with correct capitalization.
  • To blend some words when you say individual sounds like c-a-t, p-i-n, m-o-p.
  • To tell you what symmetry is and name some things that have symmetry.
  • To tell you the middle sound in these words: cat, pin, net, rot, cut


Reminders and Other News:
  • If your child would like to bring valentines to school, please have them do so between Monday, February 10th and Thursday, February 13th.  Students must bring valentines for each student.  A list was sent home last Friday, if you have lost or misplaced it, let me know. 
  • Please continue to have your child practice tying their own shoes and zipping their own coats at home.  Thanks!

Weekly Update 1/27-1/31

This Week:

  • We focused on the letter Kk.
  • We learned the sight words one, he, and she.
  • We worked on number skills.
  • We learned about Groundhog Day and predicted whether the groundhog would see his shadow or not.
  • We learned about penguins.
  • We had a cheetah rally!

Next Week:


  • We will focus on the letter Ff.
  • We will learn the words two, no, and not.
  • We will work on composing and decomposing numbers.
  • We will do some fun activities to prepare for Valentine's Day.
  • We will learn about hearts and symmetry.

Things to ask you child:
  • What are some words that start or end with Kk?
  • What sight words did you learn this week?
  • What is your favorite book to read?


Reminders and Other News:
  • A Valentine’s Day class list went home in your child’s cheetah binder today.  Please read the instructions attached to the list to make sure that delivering valentines is a smooth process.  Valentines can be brought to school starting February 10th.
  • A new reading log went home in your child's cheetah binder today.  Please return all January reading logs to school by 2/5 for a Pizza Hut coupon.
  • Conferences are coming up on March 5th and 6th.  A slip with your child's conference time is in the cheetah binder today.
  • Color week will wrap up next week.  Monday is gray/black/brown day and Tuesday is red/pink/white day.

This Week:

  • We learned the words zero, and, & said.
  • We read stories about snowmen and winter.
  • We worked on ordering numbers and teen number skills.

Next Week:

  • We will focus on the letter Kk.
  • We will learn the words one, he, and she.
  • We will read stories about penguins.
  • We will work on number skills.
  • We will predict whether or not the groundhog will see his shadow this year.

What to Ask Your Kindergartener:

  • To count to 100 by 10’s.
  • To tell you some words that rhyme with men, net and pin.
  • To practice writing the numbers 0-31.
  • To blend some words when you say individual sounds like c-a-t, p-i-n, m-o-p.
  • To count backwards from 20.
  • To find kindergarten words in a newspaper, book or magazine.
  • To practice using a letter chart.

Reminders and Other News:
  • A new book order is in your child' cheetah binder today. Please order books by January 30th.  Our class code is HXP9C.
  • We have been learning and spelling all the color words.  We will have a color week the week of 1/27 and 2/3.  This starts next week!  There is a paper copy of the schedule in your child's cheetah binder today.  The schedule of what color to wear each day is below:

Weekly Update 1/13-1/17

This Week:
  • We focused on the letter Rr.
  • We learned the words white, of, and you.
  • We learned words in the -ig word family.
  • We read a story called The Mitten and practiced retelling it.
  • We worked on composing and decomposing numbers.
  • We learned about Martin Luther King, Jr.


Next Week:
  • We will focus on the letter Dd.
  • We will learn the words and, said, and zero.
  • We will read some stories about winter.
  • We will work on teen numbers and finding numbers that are one more and one less than a number.


What to Ask Your Kindergartener:
  • To point to different objects around your house and tell you what letter they start with.
  • To count as high as they can.
  • To rubber band (stretch out to hear all sounds) the words: frog, sing, ten, chip, wait, get, tree, stack, and win.
  • To tell you what sound they hear at the end of: bike, fell, fox, run, and pig.
  • To write their numbers to 20 with no reversals.



Reminders and Other News
  • There is no school on Monday 1/20.
  • We have been learning and spelling all the color words.  We will have a color week in our classroom the week of 1/27 and 2/3.  The schedule of what color to wear each day is below. A paper copy will be in the cheetah binder next week.

Early Release Friday

School will be released 2 hours early tomorrow (Friday) due to the weather.  Kids SAFARI will be closed after school.  Please let me know by email or phone how your child will get home from school tomorrow if it is different from their regular routine.  Thanks!

Weekly Update 1/7-1/11

This Week:
  • We focused on the letter Nn
  • We learned the words gray, on, and all
  • We read a story called I Know a Wee Piggy and worked on color words and rhyming
  • We learned words in the –ip word family.
  • We worked on reading and identifying teen numbers.

Next Week:
  • We will focus on the letter Rr.
  • We will learn the words white, of, you.
  • We will learn words in the -ig word family.
  • We will read a story called The Mitten and talk about retelling using beginning, middle, and end.
  • We will work on teen numbers and composing/decomposing numbers.
  • We will learn about Martin Luther King, Jr.

What to Ask Your Kindergartener:
  • To identify teen numbers.
  • To go on a word hunt around the house for kindergarten words.
  • To chop some short words like: pig, cat, hop, pen, hug, win, block, stick…
  • To count as high as they can go – try to get to 100 or higher!
  • To count backwards from 20.

Reminders and Other News:
  • Make sure to send a coat, hat, mittens, and shoes to school with your child each day.  Please label clothing items with your child’s name so they don’t get lost.
